splat! he instantly came alive and shot up, much too quickly at first but then slower and slower until he could finally alight upon the very edge of the rocky platform. He stood motionless, with a final look into the red-orange orb of the rising sun. He peered at the ocean spreading slow motion across the boulders a long way below and his heart pounded crazily. In a cold sweat, he backed away towards the safety of the carpark. His car was unlocked, key in the ignition. He took the letter off the dash, black against the pre-dawn glow outside.
